Velveeta Jones is a hard-hitting electric blues band from central Kentucky. Formed during the summer of 2001, their sound was classic power trio. They wanted to play blues, their first love, but given their diverse musical backgrounds in country, bluegrass and rock and roll, those influences came through in the tunes. Rather than squelching those influences for the sake of blues purists, they embraced them, giving a new sound to old standards as well as charting a course for their own material.
Things were coming together nicely for the band when 9-11 struck. Their drummer, Duane Miller, was called back to active military duty, and around the same time Sondra Kirkpatrick took leave for some R & R. As a result, the band was put on the shelf for three and a half years.
Bassist Mike Anderson and guitarist Patrick Morley took gigs with established bands in the Lexington, KY area such as G Busy and The Blues Revue, The Patty Butcher Blues Band, and Johnny Hedger & Friends.
Then, over the winter of 2004/2005 with everyone healthy and ready to play, they reunited with Sondra and Duane to rekindle the fire that is Velveeta Jones.
While paying homage to the blues greats, they bring a modern, high energy sound to the concert stage or the club dance floor. They are equally as comfortable in quieter, intimate settings, leaving the amplifiers at home and performing with acoustic guitars and bare-bones percussion, truly "unplugged".
Singer Sondra "Spanky" Presley handles lead vocals and percussion, bringing her passion for the blues to bear every time she steps to the microphone. She learned her craft while growing up in a musical family, singing country and pop tunes with various bands in and around central KY. Then, she discovered the blues and a strong, new voice emerged. Don't take our word for it, though. Ask Shirley King, the Daughter of The Blues (blues legend B.B. King, that is) after a recent gig: "Didn't know a white girl could have pipes like that!"
Drummer Duane "Pepperjack" Miller, aka "Doc" shores up the rhythm section with a powerful drum sound. His fierce cymbal work has been known to sever heads. A self-admitted gear junkie, Duane can be found in his off hours scouring pawn shops and attics for new treasures to restore and put back to work.
Bassist/vocalist Michael "Cheesehead" Anderson, an accomplished musician on many levels, brings up the low end of the sonic spectrum on his trusted Fender Jazz bass. Our resident blues authority has performed throughout the South and Midwest in blues bands for many years (including B.B. King's in Memphis with Pat in 2004 and The Slippery Noodle in Indianapolis). He brings a wealth of knowledge of the genre to the table.
Guitarist/vocalist Pat "Catfish" Morley is another veteran of the local, regional and national stage. He brings a diverse selection of influences to Velveeta Jones, and his playing style is a six-string gumbo of Chicago, Texas, Louisiana/Delta and East Coast blues. Sprinkled with country, bluegrass and rock n' roll, he makes it all his own while acknowledging past and contemporary blues greats.
